A Family Cookbook

That’ Salata REcipes

That’ Salata Recipes is a nontraditional illustrated cookbook of family recipes that have been passed down and what make up an important part of my family.Instead of utilizing photographs like many recipe book, the use of illustration through gouache allows the book to feel unique and emphasize different aspects of cooking and the different recipes.

Finihsed spreads

Completed in gouache, watercolor, and digital line. Layout brought to finish in Indesign

the cover

A collage of some of the finished recipes in the book, all completed with gouache, watercolor, and digital line, with hand lettering for the title.

chapter headers

With the nontraditional way, that I decided to set up the cookbook, instead of dividing by types of food, each section of the cookbook is divided by where the recipe came from. These chapter headings, all illustrate the person who inspired the recipes, along with an illustration of them doing something that they love the most. Included, is myself, my mother, and my two grandmothers. All images were painted with gouache and digital line.

Paintless pages

With only a semester of time to create this project in full, including making the concept, sketching, layouts, and much more, a good amount of the book was not able to be fully rendered. To help it feel intentional and so I could continue to keep recipes I loved in the book, I made a cohesive style of line illustrations that were spaced all through the book.

Other Pages

There were several other types of pages that needed to be included to make this book possible and make it flow and make sense. These pages were either gouache, digital line work, or watercolor. I am also including here recipes in watercolor that were interspersed with gouache and line work to help all the recipe pages feel unique, but all cohesive under the same style.
